What Is Pelvic Health Physical Therapy?

Pelvic Health Physical Therapy (PHPT) is a specialization within the physical therapy profession that primarily focuses on body systems within and around the pelvis - largely targeting the muscles that make up the pelvic floor. PHPT is currently an under-represented niche of physical therapy, and there are often misconceptions and lack of understanding of what PHPT embodies and who can benefit.

PHPT not only targets the pelvic floor musculature but also any joints, nerves, or organs in the area. This may include joints like the lower back, hip and sacroiliac joints, the tailbone (coccyx), the pubic symphysis. It can also include nerves that run from the spine through the pelvis and down the legs, and to the pelvic organs and genitals. PHPT also improves bladder function, bowel function, and even reproductive function.

PHPT focuses on strengthening, lengthening, relaxing, and improving the coordination of the pelvic floor muscles and nerves. Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles may be required to help improve pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence. Lengthening and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles may be used to improve symptoms of pelvic pain or prepare the pelvic floor for vaginal childbirth. Improving coordination of the pelvic floor may be necessary to help you hold in and fully empty your bladder and bowels.
